Detention Delegate - International Committee of the Red Cross May 26th 2013, 08:18 ICRC detention delegates aim to secure humane treatment and conditions of detention for people deprived of their liberty by: - developing and maintaining a good understanding of the humanitarian situation in places of detention through collection and analysis of information received from various sources (such as detainees, ex-detainees, their families, authorities, individuals and organizations, available documents and legislation, etc.) - visiting places of detention in accordance with ICRC standard procedures and conditions, which include meetings with detaining authorities and interviews with detainees - taking action (making oral and written interventions, promoting relevant laws and standards, facilitating re-establishment of family links, providing material and technical assistance, supporting the work of specialized ICRC colleagues, working with authorities to address humanitarian concerns, etc.) - in addition, the delegates contribute to other humanitarian objectives of the delegation to which they are posted, depending on needs and operational priorities in that specific context When applicants apply to work for the ICRC, to any type of position, they apply to a position and not a country. The ICRC sends its staff where they're needed - staff may not pick a country of choice.
